April 19, 2013 - PRLog -- Blind Children’s Learning Center will receive the “Stellar Support of Students” award at California State University, Fullerton’s (CSUF) Community Engagement Awards ceremony on Tuesday, May 7, 2013. The award honors an organization that has guided and/or mentored students and has gone beyond its duties as a host site for experimental learning.

Blind Children’s Learning Center was nominated by CSUF student Karina Salazar and faculty member Diana Robles Nichols to receive the award by the CSUF Center for Internships & Community Engagement. Salazar interned for the Center from September to December 2012, completing approximately 100 hours of service. She assisted in the toddler classrooms and was “great with kids,” says Karissa Senterfitt, Volunteer Coordinator at Blind Children’s Learning Center.

“Interning at Blind Children’s Learning Center was absolutely rewarding,” says Salazar. “I learned so much from the students and staff, and everyone was so kind and instantly welcoming. Thanks to the Center, I know what I want to do with the rest of my life. The teachers have become role models for me. Their patience and the unconditional love they have for every child is admirable.”

The Center is the recipient of one of only six annual awards recognizing those who participate in community engagement activities such as service-learning, academic internships, AmeriCorps projects, and other types of course-related community service.

About Blind Children's Learning Center:
A non-profit agency, providing services for children with visual impairments.   Founded in 1962 by six blind adults originally called “Services for the Blind Orange County,” the focus was providing support for individuals with visual impairments.  The founders quickly discovered the key to helping children with visual impairments was to start working with them at a very early age. Today the agency serves children and their families through their Early Childhood Center (on-site preschool) and Outreach Services with the mission to provide early intervention, education and services for blind, visually impaired or deaf-blind children and their families to empower independence.
