ArtCorps and EcoLogic Development Fund Present Book Release and Photo Exhibit May 16th

ArtCorps and EcoLogic invite you to witness the efforts to conserve the rich environmental and cultural heritage of communities in the Guatemalan highlands with a compelling photo exhibit and the release of the book Wisdom of the Rocky Hillsides.

IPSWICH, Mass. - April 18, 2013 - PRLog -- ArtCorps and EcoLogic Development Fund are pleased to announce the culmination of a year of arts-based environmental education, creative research and community partnership in the Guatemalan highlands. On May 16 at the Boston Public Library, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, please join these organizations for “Awakening a Culture of Conservation,” an exhibit featuring the moving photography of ArtCorps Artist Isabel Carrió in tandem with the release of Wisdom of the Rocky Hillsides, a book of stories and pictures crafted by K’iché Mayan youth. The book’s launch and photo exhibit will serve to highlight the efforts of all parties involved to preserve the environmental and cultural heritage of the Guatemalan highlands. The event, held in the library’s Mezzanine conference room, is free and open to the public, and light refreshments will be served.

Carrió’s photography documents the leadership development process and community efforts to preserve the holistic legacies of the Maya-K’iché people in Totonicapán, Guatemala. In conjunction with 48 Cantons, a traditional governing body of elders, Carrió worked with youth in the area (collectively known as Youth Leaders in Conservation) to strengthen inter-generational ties and to conserve vital information necessary to sustain their environmental and cultural legacy. The result of those collective efforts is a fascinating artbook created with the use of mixed painting techniques that relates ancestral knowledge and helps to keep the oral tradition of the Maya-K’iché alive.

This book is the result of the ongoing partnership between ArtCorps and EcoLogic Development Fund. Since 2009, ArtCorps fellows have served at select EcoLogic project sites, engaging people of all ages in environmental and social justice initiatives through creative action. Founded in 2000, ArtCorps trains organizations and activists on the frontlines of social change to harness art and culture as powerful tools to build sustainable communities. EcoLogic works with poor, rural communities to help them become better environmental stewards in order to save their forests and water and to improve their living conditions.

Additional partners include The Finer Image of Danvers, MA, whose generous support made the photo exhibit possible.
