Follow on Google News | Dylan Thomas Centre due to mark the centenary of famous poet R.S.Thomas’ birth on 18 AprilSwansea's Dylan Thomas Centre is due to mark the centenary of famous Welsh poet R.S.Thomas’ birth later this week.
By: City and County of Swansea An evening of poetry, music and discussion has been lined up to mark the occasion at the Maritime Quarter attraction on Thursday April 18 at 7pm. Born in 1913, almost all of Cardiff-born Thomas’ work concerns the Welsh landscape and the Welsh people. His views on the position of the Welsh people as a conquered people are never far below the surface and, as a cleric, his religious views are also present in his writings. Some of his earlier works focus on the personal stories of his parishioners, the farm labourers and working men and their wives, challenging the cosy view of the traditional pastoral poem with harsh and vivid descriptions of rural lives. Professor M. Wynn Thomas, executor of Thomas' unpublished literary estate, will launch his new book, R.S. Thomas: Serial Obsessive, at the Dylan Thomas Centre event. Bangor University's Professor Tony Brown will also be on hand to discuss the newly-released edition of R.S. Thomas' Uncollected Poems, which he has edited with Jason Walford Davies. Menna Elfyn, Brian Breeze and otherswill be at the event to give specially-commissioned contemporary responses to Thomas' work in poetry and music. Entry is free thanks to the University of Wales press. Have a look at http://www.dylanthomas.com for more information or call 01792 463980. End
