How can you assist and guide a Vision Impaired Person?

Attending a wedding recently, I noticed a lady struggling to find her table after having some official photos taken.  She bumped into people and doorways, she nearly fell down 2 steps, she sat at a table where she didn’t know anybody, and she knocked over a glass on the table.  I introduced myself and asked if I could assist her in some way.  She explained she had severe macular degeneration, and was totally disorientated and ‘lost’.

The observations of her mobility, gave me the clue this lady had a vision problem.  Otherwise, you would not know by looking at her.

Tips on Guiding/Assisting a Vision Impaired Person

1.Introduce yourself

2.Ask if a person wants assistance

3.Let the person take YOUR arm (ask which arm), so they can follow you

4.Walk at a comfortable pace

5.Be a good communicator:

(a)explain what is happening in the surrounds

(b)give directions eg is the door on the right or left, does it open in or out

6.Manoeuvring a narrow passageway/doorway, move your arm into the small of your back, and their arm will follow

7.Avoid potential hazards

8.Stop at curbs/stairs straight on (not at an angle)

(a) tell the person if you are going up or down

(b) if there is a handrail, put your guiding arm/hand on rail, and their arm will  slide down

(c) tell the person when the stairs are 'finished'

9.Finding a seat, place your guiding arm on the back of the chair, and their arm will follow

10.Getting into the car, place their hand on the door handle. Tell them when you’re closing the door

11.Don’t leave someone in a FREE space

12.Don’t assume you know what a vision impaired person needs.  Ask them and listen
