South Valley Unitarian Universalist Society celebrates 30th anniversary with April 20 music program

Salt Lake's South Valley Unitarian Universalist Society Choir and guest musicians perform "Songs of the Earth," featuring the music of Society Choir Director Mary Lou Prince, with lyrics and storytelling by Rev. Patty C. Willis

SALT LAKE CITY - April 15, 2013 - PRLog -- With environmental problems worsening all over the world, Rev. Patty C. Willis and Mary Lou Prince wondered, “What if we fell in love with the Earth? If we fell in love, would we treat this beautiful Earth with tenderness and heal the problems as we heal our own hearts?”

During their five years of living in southern Arizona, Patty and Mary Lou found that the closeness they felt to the area’s beauty also inspired songs of the seasons.

“We squinted into the sunlight and listened to the old legends. We dreamed of crossing the chasm on a woven rainbow bridge.” They watched the sun rise over Spider Rock in Canyon de Chelly, light dancing on the place where the Great Spirit is said to live.

Now, these “songs of the seasons,” sung by the South Valley Choir and woven together with storytelling, form the core of “Songs of the Earth.”

“Come journey with us from the first ray of sunlight over Spider Rock to the first ray of sun that signals the turn of the axis of the Earth towards spring. After that, we will take you on a ride in the clouds so you can see the whole of the beautiful Earth from above.”

ABOUT REV. PATTY C. WILLIS AND MARY LOU PRINCE
Patty and Mary Lou have worked together since they first took their one-woman play featuring koto and shakuhachi players to the Edinburgh (Scotland) Festival Fringe in 1987. Their collaborative work, “Just Between the Three of Us,” was hailed as the “great east-west event of the Edinburgh Festival” by the Sunday Times of London.

Both women have won national awards in Japan for their creative work in music and theater. For two years they toured Japan with “The Bear Story,” to celebrate the publication of Patty’s book, “The Village Above the Stars,” chosen as recommended reading by the National Japanese Library Association.

The Los Angeles Times has written that, “They showed the power of the folk tale to create wonder.”
