Study Tips That Will Help You Always Ace Your Exams

Exams are the most important part of college life. They are essentially why college students attend classes and spend their time in school.

BRISBANE, Australia - April 15, 2013 - PRLog -- Exam periods are arguably the most dreaded time of the academic calendar. Some students fear exams so much that they end up getting panic attacks when the exams near. This need not be the case however. The key to getting straight A's in your exams lies almost entirely in your study habits. It is you to either make passing your exams easy or difficult. Here are several tips that can help you have an impressive transcript at the end of every semester.

First of all, you need to know how best you learn. Everyone has their own way of learning or grasping concepts. For some students, all they need to do is attend classes on a regular basis and they grasp the relevant concepts immediately as the lecture is in session. If you are one such student, then you should strive to never miss a single class. Chances of you fully understanding what was taught when you missed a class are not very high. There is a second category of students who grasp concepts through reading and re-reading what was taught. Many at times, students in this category are referred to as bookworms. If you happen to be a bookworm, don't pay attention to what others say, read and re-read and even do it a third time if necessary. There is also a group of students who thrive in group work. Such students learn best if they are part of a group discussion with other students. This category of students finds it hard to carry out individual study sessions. If you are this type of student, it would do you well to find others like you and form a functional study group for the benefit of all. Knowing your best study strategy and embracing it fully is bound to make your academic life in college much easier. You can always be sure of good grades if you know and stay true to yourself.

The second study tip is one that most college students take for granted. As a matter of fact, it is one tip that the larger majority of students are aware of, but they just never take it seriously. You need to avoid the "last-minute -rush" kind of study. College life is exciting with all the freedom and this tends to divert student's attention from their studies until such a time when the exams are around the corner. Studying for your end-semester exams will be much easier if you have been studying throughout the semester, for the obvious reason that you will be familiar with most of the contents of the particular course or unit. Your workload will therefore be less and you will need to study less. Most students start studying a few weeks, sometimes even days to their final exams. This is definitely not the way to go. Always remember the 5P's - "Prior Preparation Prevents Poor Performance."

One study habit you should avoid that is closely related to last minute studying is the act of cramming. You should never cram for an exam. Many at times, students will cram their notes from their books word for word. There is great danger in doing this. If you happen to go to the exam room and forget a single line of the crammed text, you will be in for a rough ride. It is almost always impossible to recollect your thoughts and give meaningful answers in such scenarios. Even the simplest of questions which you used to answer in class will prove to be a challenge as the answers will have evaporated from your mind. As you study, your objective should be to understand concepts as opposed to cramming. Once you understand them, you can easily put them in your own words on the exam answer booklet.

Your study environment has a direct bearing on how successful your studies will be. Everyone has their preferences when it comes to the ideal study environment. This is why you will find some students going to the library to study while others stay in their rooms, or sit under a shade to study. The bottom line is that your study environment should be conducive for you. Ideally, it should be free of distractions. If you're not comfortable in your study environment, you will not absorb much of what you're studying.

While studying, always remember to look at past papers for the particular exam to have a feel of what to expect. Sometimes college lecturers refer to previously done exams when setting one yet to be done. Your exam will definitely not be identical to one done in the past, but you will have an idea of how the questions are set. If you're lucky you might even get a question or two indirectly lifted from a previous exam. This is also a very effective way of covering several topics of the specific unit at a go. All the questions from the previous exam are bound to be from different topics within the unit. You will therefore go through a number of topics as opposed to reading each one of them on their own. Closely related to this is the fact that you should not ignore the class assignments as well as continuous assessment tests given by your lecturer throughout the semester. These can also go a long way in showing how the specific lecturer sets his or her exams as well as give you an idea on how to go about answering the questions. It is not uncommon for lecturers to borrow questions from class assignments and CATs for the final exams.

In as much as you're studying for exams, you should not overdo it. This is especially important during the exam period. You cannot study 24hours a day. You need to take a rest in between study periods. Take a walk, listen to some music or even visit a friend. This gives your brain ample time to rest and rejuvenate itself for the next study session. One thing you should never do is studying throughout the night when you have an exam the next day. Getting enough rest is an integral part of successful study habits. Remember all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

Last but definitely not least, you need to avoid predicting what your course instructor will set in your exam. Many college students have the habit of speculating which topics will form part of the exam. They then go ahead to focus all their attention on these topics at the expense of the others. There are two reasons why this is a dangerous situation. The obvious reason is that the said topics may not feature anywhere in the exam and the student is almost assured of failing the exam if this should happen. Secondly, this goes against the whole idea of getting educated. Even if the said topics appear in the exam, as a student you will not have a good understanding of that particular unit. Going to college is not all about passing exams. Some of what you're taught may not come in the exam but you may need the knowledge later in your professional life. You should therefore carry out a holistic study of the subject matter in a particular unit as opposed to singling out topics from which you think the exam questions will come.
