Mazda to Debut the 2014 Mazda6 With All-new SKYACTIV Diesel Engine

Mazda has redefined the way a diesel engine operates by improving power and fuel economy. The vehicle should arrive later this year at Cox Mazda.

BRADENTON, Fla. - April 12, 2013 - PRLog -- Cox Mazda in Bradenton is pleased to announce Mazda is planning to release a 2014 Mazda6 diesel model (http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/videoController.action?op=playVideo&playlistId=1DD18B423A1D109E&videoId=cK5SQkEUBdo). Taking advantage of its full range of SKYACTIV engine technology, Mazda has reworked the diesel engine from the ground up. While in the past diesel engines may have seemed like more of a fuel-efficient compromise over their gasoline powered relatives, the new Mazda SKYACTIV-D 2.2L Twin-Turbo Diesel engine is changing that.

In the early days of diesel, the engines were seen as clunky and dirty, while today's diesel engines are clean, powerful, and above all, efficient. Regardless, most diesel engines require heavier engine components to supply the needed pressure for diesel's higher compression ratio, as well as expensive after-burn systems to clean up nitrous oxide exhaust.

To solve this issue, Mazda engineers focused on four areas when developing the SKYACTIV Diesel engine to solve these problems: creating lower emissions, adding more torque, lowering engine weight, and increasing fuel economy

Mazda began by lowering the compression ratio of the engine to 14:1, the lowest of any diesel engine in the world. This allows for cleaner combustion that will pass all emissions tests without the aid of a nitrous oxide filter. Since the compression ratio is lower, engine weight was able to be reduced by 10%. This lower weight helps to reduce the Mazda6's overall weight, increase fuel efficiency even more, and increase handling. All in all, the diesel engine is expected to get drivers an estimated highway fuel economy of 40 mpg.

In Mazda's own words: the new diesel engines, “delivers the driving performance of a 4.0L V8, the cleanliness of the latest clean gasoline engines, and the fuel economy of a hybrid.”
