A Game Played by Children, but Perfected by Adults

Book launch: White Star Hotel, Sunday May 12, 4-8pm

How did a pint-sized bespectacled lad from Invercargill, New Zealand, the southern tip of its existence, come to found and organise one of the world’s biggest drum festivals?
Sharing the stage with the world’s most famous drummers who are also his lifelong friends.
But Bruce Aitken’s greatest accomplishment was reuniting with his first true love 40 years later against all odds which now finds him the happiest he has been in his life.
From supporting the troops in Afghanistan to touring throughout the world, overcoming two heart attacks and open-heart surgery to reuniting with lost family members, Bruce’s life is a triumph over adversity.
This novel covers the life of Bruce Aitken who founded and organised one of the world’s biggest drum festivals over a 10-year period. The Cape Breton International Drum Festival (CBIDF) ran from 2001-10 and featured the world’s best-known drummers despite being held in a small, isolated town on the Eastern seaboard of Canada.
The book is in no chronological order and begins with two forewards written by Denny Seiwell and Danny Seraphine. Seiwell has played with the world’s leading artists including being a founding member of Paul McCartney and Wings whilst Seraphine is best known for his work with Chicago of which he was also a founding member.
Wings sold about 50 million albums with its 1977 single Mull of Kintyre still the biggest-selling non-charity single in the United Kingdom.
Chicago is second only to The Beach Boys in Billboard singles and albums chart success among American bands. It was the leading US singles charting group during the 1970s having sold over 38 million units in the US, with 22 gold, 18 platinum, and 8 multi-platinum albums.
Added to this is not just the other famous drummers mentioned in the book but who have supplied an individual quote for Bruce in specific regard to this novel and we have drummers who have played with Santana, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Pink Floyd, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Billy Joel and James Brown to mention only a few.
Bruce is in constant contact with these people who are all obviously aware of the novel being written and who will let their networks and fan bases numbering millions know when and where it is available. You can understand the sales potential when these people, and thus their fans, become aware of the book. These are the drummers that played on the soundtrack of our lives.
Bruce himself is a multi award-winning artist who has shared the stage with many of
the world’s greatest and most influential drummers who have changed the history of
music, plus having worked with the cream of New Zealand’s most influential artists of
the 1960/70s.

But the most inspiring part of this novel is Bruce being re-united with his first love
from New Zealand and finding true happiness for the first time in his life at age 56.
Societal pressures in NZ in the early 1970s forced the couple apart but proving that
true love never dies, the couple made contact 40 years later and found their feelings
for each other have never wavered. In a fairytale come true, they now live happily
ever after.

Bruce also toured Afghanistan in 2008 supporting the troops and witnessed the extreme danger and harsh realities of living in a war zone. This included a suicide bombing so close he could smell the carnage.
There are also some hilarious anecdotes that can only happen in the crazy and hedonistic world of the music industry such as a previous band member being asked at his front door by the constabulary to pay a fine immediately or be thrown in jail. After deliberating the question he then replied: “Hang on, I’ll get my jacket.”
Bruce Aitken’s story is one of triumphing against adversity and leaving a lasting legacy on the drumming world, the overwhelming happiness in reuniting with your first and only true love and remaining true to your beliefs to achieve your dreams.
