ABOUT THE ONSITE AVNET TECH GAMES: The Avnet Tech Games is a collaborative effort by Arizona educators and technology companies to help the state’s two- and four-year college students acquire valuable skills needed to thrive in the modern workplace. At the Avnet Tech Games, students compete in a game-like setting to gain hands-on, practical experience in addition to the academic instruction they receive in the classroom. It will feature seven multidisciplinary technology competitions that require students to test their knowledge, creativity, decision-making, problem-solving and technical skills. The 2013 competitive events include:

Accenture Green Data Center Challenge - Develop and present a proposal to bring an aging legacy data center forward into a model green data center.
Build the Fastest Computer - Build, troubleshoot and tune a PC the fastest.
Digital Design Dilemma - Create, validate and document a FPGA design that works on a provided circuit board.
Java Blitz - Develop an application using Java 7 Standard Edition, which is a popular software development language that is used in many large corporations today.
Networking Expert Battle - Student teams will set up, deploy, troubleshoot and repair a network similar to a small office configuration.
Patch Panel Madness - Build a working data network using a provided network diagram, cabling, patch panels, switches and racks.
Refurb it Fastest (http://avnettechgames.com/activegame/1390) - Race to build a computer using refurbished parts. During the building of the PC, teams must troubleshoot the parts to make sure they are fully functional and qualified to be refurbished.
Robot Race Obstacle Course - Build and program a robot to maneuver and tow objects through different courses.
Solar Scrimmage (http://avnettechgames.com/activegame/176) – Design, build, test and present the best overall solar-powered “green energy” water pumping system. Team will compete by assembling a solar powered water pumping and distribution system.

The 2013 Spring Virtual Avnet Tech Games being featured onsite include:

Android™ App Sell it or Smelt it - Students develop a mobile application for the Android™ platform by using innovative MIT Android™ App Inventor Technology.
Green Video Competition - Competitors combine video production skills, environmental awareness and marketing skills to create a short video on environmental initiatives at their college.

Competitors of the Spring Virtual Avnet Tech Games will have their work displayed onsite and the winners will be announced during the award ceremony for the onsite games. The virtual games expand the breadth of the onsite Avnet Tech Games by allowing students to compete on a national level.

Each winning student of the virtual and onsite Avnet Tech Games can receive up to $1,000 in scholarship money. Faculty members will collect $200 for leading participating teams and an additional $300 for each winning team. Participating students will also have the opportunity to attend a networking hour, where they can connect with event sponsors and executives from companies such as Accenture, DP Air Corporation, Alphagraphics, BC Graphics, Intel, Prisma Graphics, Microchip and Round2.
