New Hazlett Theater Presents 2013-14 Community Supported Art Performance Series

Community Supported Art Performance Series in Pittsburgh's Northside
By: New Hazlett Theater

PITTSBURGH - April 11, 2013 - PRLog -- Pittsburgh, PA - The New Hazlett Theater announces a brand new way to experience local art: the first ever Community Supported Art performance series.  Subscribers buy into the series for $100 per “share” in the program, and in addition to six fresh performances from local artists, “shareholders” also have the unique opportunity to directly interact with the artists.

“We’re basing the CSA series on the Community Supported Agriculture model, which is a popular way for people to support local farmers and buy local, seasonal food,” René Conrad, New Hazlett Theater Executive Director, said.  "Traditional CSA shareholders don't know exactly what produce they'll receive, but they're certain it will be fresh and high-quality - plus they know they’re supporting local farmers.  So we thought, ‘What would happen if we worked to support local performing artists in the same way?’”

Performances take place every other month starting on Saturday, August 10. In addition to admission to all six shows, shareholders will also have the opportunity to meet and get to know the up-and-coming artists they are supporting.  This support allows the artists selected for the CSA program the opportunity to pursue their own visions, to present their own programs, and most importantly, to reach new audiences.

After a lengthy selection process, the New Hazlett Theater CSA review panel has hand-picked six of the local artists in southwestern Pennsylvania.  Today, we are pleased to announce the 2013-14 season lineup includes unique projects by:

·      Poet and playwright Kelli Stevens Kane

·      Multimedia puppeteers Miniature Curiosa

·      Exploratory dance company Continuum Dance Theater

·      Audio/visual astronaut Dan Wilcox

·      Genre-transcending musicians Electric Laboratory Chamber Orchestra

·      Boundary defying movement artists Maree ReMalia and merrygogo

The New Hazlett CSA Artists will preview their works on April 26 at the Gallery Crawl.

Schedule of CSA Performances

Kelli Stevens Kane, August 10, 2013 at 8pm

As funny as she is frank, Georgetta Holmes Stevens -- "Big George" to her family and friends -- is a tiny woman with an enormous personality.  When she isn't going to strangers' funerals, Big George is speaking her mind with a contagious authenticity.  Playwright Kelli Stevens Kane weaves a portrait of this singular woman live on stage.

Miniature Curiosa, October 12, 2013 at 8pm

Dr. Douglas Irene is here to present his lecture entitled Birds of America.  Don’t mind the woman in the photos. That’s merely Margaret, Dr. Douglas Irene’s wife.  Margaret never could escape the watchful eye of those birds of America.  Poor Margaret.  Cameras soar through miniature scenery and frightful dreamscapes as Miniature Curiosa takes us on a multimedia exploration into scale and suspense.
Continuum Dance Theater, December 14, 2013
Sarah Parker and Continuum Dance Theater delve into the depths of human yearning in this world premier of Objects of DESIRE.  Part dance performance, part psychological experiment, Continuum Dance Theater has combed the streets of local communities to explore the root causes love, success, comfort and pain.

Dan Wilcox, February 8, 2014

By 2030, NASA and commercial space companies will send humans to Mars, but it will only be a one-way trip.  Would you go? Wilcox's Onward to Mars is a live, audio/visual astronautical rock opera that takes you on a figurative journey to Mars to discover the music of the Red Planet.

Electric Laboratory Chamber Orchestra, April 19, 2014

Pittsburgh-based ELCO transcends the boundaries of genre with their grassroots interpretations of pop, rock, and classical music.  In April, ELCO performs new works by composers Alan Tormey and David Gerard Matthews, written specifically for a rare and exotic instrument – the ondes Martenot.

Maree ReMalia, June 14, 2014

Maree ReMalia and merrygogo investigate the way we take up space.  From silly to somber, seen and unseen, this unique performance oscillates between movement and sound, exploring a broad-range of physical expressions as it flows in and around the work of visual artist Blaine Siegel.

The New Hazlett Theater is a non-profit performing arts center with a mission to cultivate the arts and provide a venue for world-class cultural events.
