Social Media Could Cost You Your Job

Next time the camera goes click or there is a rant that needs to be said, pause before hitting the glimmering “upload” button. A career might be at stake.

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario - April 10, 2013 - PRLog -- Next time the camera goes click or there is a rant that needs to be said, pause before hitting the glimmering “upload” button. A career might be at stake.

One in five companies have rejected an applicant because of their profiles on social networking sites. Jobseekers are being warned to be far more vigilant over what they reveal online, as it could prevent them from obtaining employment. Applicants are regularly turned down for interviews because of their profiles on social media sites.

Even those with careers who passed the initial online screening should not relax.

Increasing numbers of workers have been fired or asked to resign for careless social media posts. Don’t assume strong privacy settings will protect the information from leaking.

The best of from the net:

A high school teacher was forced to resign after her principal said photos posted to the net was 'promoting alcohol use'

An 18-year-old Buckingham Palace guard was fired ahead of the royal wedding after he allegedly called Kate Middleton a 'stupid stuck up cow' in a post.

An administrative assistant was fired after three weeks for posting about how bored she was with her job. Her status updates included: 'first day at work. omg!! So dull!!'

A prison officer was fired for gross misconduct after becoming social media friends with current and previous inmates.

Judges have been warned about being active on social media. Their connections and statements could compromise their objectiveness to judge cases fairly.

Teachers have said they hide in supermarkets when buying beer, never smoke or use bad language in public for fear of not posting themselves, but landing on page of a student.

In just the recent past it was only the famous who got caught doing inappropriate acts. A tape recording or a snapped photo and then off to the papers, magazines, and television. Today everyone can be famous for the wrong reason in just an instant and get caught in the net

Our online presence touches just about every aspect of our lives. Even those who are employed are subject to a search. In addition people who are dating and those planning a political future will have their entire online presence examined. It’s only a matter of time.
