St. Mary’s Academy Belles are Division I Champions

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - April 8, 2013 - PRLog -- St. Mary's Academy Belles claimed a first place finish in the 4x100 relay at the 86th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on Saturday, March 30th at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas campus. With a time of 46.99 seconds Allanah Hughes '14, Sierra Peterson '14, Aliyah Hale '15 and Rachel Toliver '13 won the 4x100 relay and set a Division I record. Coached by Robert King and Rene Anderson, the SMA Belles traveled for the first time to the Texas Relays hoping to gain exposure and compete at a national level.  Coach King acknowledges that "we now know that our student athletes are prepared to meet the challenges of competing at the next level."

         Other significant results include: the 4x200 meter relay team of Ravyn Miller '13, Sydney Johnson '13, Sierra Peterson '14, and Morgan Pecantte '15 finished in 2nd place with a time of 1:42.3; the 4x400 meter relay team of Johnson, Pecantte, Miller and Zuri Henderson '15 finished in 2nd place with a time of 3:59.42; Kyra Anderson '15 finished 4th, but ran a lifetime best of 14.71 in the 100m hurdles and Kayla Phillips '13 finished 4th,  but jumped a lifetime best of 39'4.25 in the triple jump while Bailey Mason '13 placed 20th.

         About St. Mary’s Academy: St Mary’s Academy (SMA), is a private, Catholic high school for young women, founded and sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet since 1889. SMA serves 315 students with top-notch college-prep curricula and instruction, including comprehensive supportive services such as intensive tutoring, academic and college counseling, a full athletic department, and arts courses. Approximately, 53% of SMA's students are African American, 28% Latina and 17% multi racial, 1% Asian-American, and 1% Caucasian. Twenty-nine percent live in Inglewood, 62% percent live in LA City, and 9% live in nearby cities such as Carson, Compton, and Hawthorne. For the last eight years, 100% of the graduates have been accepted into colleges and universities. Of the 2012 graduating class, 61% were accepted to four-year colleges and 39% to community colleges.
