JOPLIN, Mo. - April 3, 2013 - PRLog -- In 1946 Nat King Cole said it best:

“If you ever plan to motor west, travel my way; take the highway that is best.

Get your kicks on route sixty-six.

It winds from Chicago to LA; more than two thousand miles all the way.

Get your kicks on route sixty-six. Now you go through Saint Looey; Joplin, Missouri,

And Oklahoma City is mighty pretty.

You see Amarillo, Gallup, New Mexico, Flagstaff, Arizona. Don't forget Winona, Kingman, Barstow, San Bernardino.

Won't you get hip to this timely tip: When you make that California trip; Get your kicks on route sixty-six.”

Of course King Cole had style while singing these Bobby Troup lyrics, and helped guide the adventurer in all of us to travel down memory lane on this historic Route 66.  Many artists were enamored by the representation of this soon to be famous US Highway that the song was also recorded by Chuck Berry in 1961, The Rolling Stones in 1964, Depeche Mode in 1987, Pappo’s Blues in 1995, John Mayer in 2006, and Glenn Frey in 2012 just to name a few.

The lyrics read as a mini-travelogue about the major stops along the route, listing several cities and towns that Route 66 passes through, St Louis; Joplin, Missouri; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Amarillo, Texas; Gallup, New Mexico; Flagstaff, Arizona; Winona, Arizona; Kingman, Arizona; Barstow, California; and San Bernardino, California.

It makes perfect since for Joplin Missouri’s well known automotive dealership, Crossroads Chevrolet Cadillac http://www.crossroadsjoplin.com to be one of the premier sponsors for a mural which will be located on the south wall of the Pearl Brothers True Value Hardware store at 617 S. Main Street.  The murals will be able to be viewed from the intersection of Seventh and Main streets, where the original course of the route turned west towards Kansas.

“Crossroads Chevrolet Cadillac is very excited to be a part of the Joplin’s recovery process and also to show our support in honoring this section of Route 66.  There have been so many Chevy and Cadillac’s that have used the first continuously paved highway in the United States.  This is our way of recognizing the history that came before us” stated Greg Woods, General Manager of Crossroads Chevrolet Cadillac.

Construction began in 1926, and the Missouri portion was finished in 1932.  Route 66 changed travel and tourism in America.

Thanks to sponsors like Crossroads Chevrolet Cadillac, now visitors will be able to commemorate their travels on the historic road in quaint Joplin, Missouri Monday, July 1st.
