Who Needs Affordable Housing in Greater Cincinnati?

Waning housing support spurs new educational video to be released this spring.

CINCINNATI - April 2, 2013 - PRLog -- Alice Skirtz, President of the Affordable Housing Advocates (AHA), announced today that in conjunction with its “Everybody Knows” awareness campaign, and in association with the Greater Cincinnati Foundation, PNC Foundation and the Cincinnati Development Fund, a new educational video about affordable housing is to be released this spring.  A public viewing will occur on Tuesday, April 23rd, 5:30 PM at the United Way Convening Center (2400 Reading Rd).

Who Needs Affordable Housing in Greater Cincinnati?  Defines what affordable housing is, who needs it and the various types of affordable housing that exist.  The 13-minute video and its companion discussion guide are informative tools to be used to facilitate community discussions around this important issue.

Even though most acknowledge the need for all Americans to have access to safe, decent, affordable housing, the topic remains at the center of debate and support for local initiatives have become passive.  This support gap serves up an opportunity to inform, spread awareness and dispel common affordable housing myths.

“Affordable housing is not just for people that are poor, it’s a concern that we all share,” says Skirtz.  "This video hit a home run by showing the true face of affordable housing; regular folks just like the rest of the community.  This will be a valuable piece along with the discussion guide eminently useful for advocates to take the message to the larger community.”

The video is designed to provide a general overview of a dense issue and most importantly, it attempts to put a face on affordable housing.  It includes a series of interviews featuring affordable housing residents.  Administrative assistants, teachers, veterans, senior citizens and people with disabilities all need affordable housing. The video has elicited extremely positive responses from educators, advocates, politicians, faith based groups, community councils and agencies.

The Affordable Housing Advocates is a group of housing providers, advocates, and civic groups dedicated to “Opening Doors” and to ensuring good, safe, accessible, affordable housing for all people in the Greater Cincinnati area.
