PROVIDENCE, R.I. - April 1, 2013 - PRLog -- Held by the U.S. Forest Service, Forest Products Lab (FPL) and The Engineered Wood Association, the award ceremony in Rhode Island honored ZeroEnergy Design (ZED) as the Grand Award winner in the Carbon Challenge Providence Design Competition. Open to entrants nationwide, the contest encouraged affordable home design that minimized fossil fuel use and carbon footprint.  Additional Carbon Challenge partners in Providence included Habitat for Humanity of Rhode Island, AIA Rhode Island, and sponsors LP Building Products and Boise Cascade.

With the support of life-cycle assessment software from the Athena Sustainable Materials Institute, design teams focused on minimizing greenhouse gas emissions, cost effectiveness, and aesthetic appeal for a Habitat for Humanity vacant lot located in Providence, Rhode Island. Winners were awarded cash prizes with the Grand Prize and $5,000 presented to ZeroEnergy Design.

“We were extremely impressed by the entries to the Carbon Challenge Design Competition; the designers took innovative approaches to reducing the home’s carbon footprint while achieving both aesthetic appeal and optimal building performance,” said Bob Clark, senior engineered wood specialist for APA. “These designs will improve not only the livability of homes, but also of the surrounding community.”

ZED’s winning design, “The Little Green Rhody,” is a four-bedroom, two-bath home with a traditional aesthetic.  The super-insulated building envelope, high performance windows, efficient mechanical systems, and solar electric system, collectively yield an annual performance target of net zero energy. “This design is very buildable and beautifully represented,” noted one judge. “It fits the context of the neighborhood very well.”
