Gourd Master Sam X Shares Stories of African Art – Friday

Springtime Festival – Saturday

Easter Egg Hunt – Sunday

(Delray Beach, FL – March 27, 2013)  The Spady Cultural Heritage Museum is inviting the public to participate in three fun and informative events over the coming Eastern Weekend:

Friday, March 29 – 5:30 p.m.

Presentation by Gourd Master Sam X

Sam X, the Gourd Master (www.thegourdmastersamx.com), will add an interactive feature to the current exhibit at the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum with a special presentation on “The Many Faces of the Gourd.”  This presentation will be given in the Williams Cottage, adjacent to the Spady Museum, 170 NW 5th Avenue in Delray Beach.

Born in Sylvester, GA, Sam X has established himself as an influence in the area of American contemporary art. Through the manipulation of gourds and wood, he compliments and often exaggerates the natural organic beauty of its form and texture. The originality and elegance of his work brings each piece to life with its own soul, energy and personality.  Consistently daring, his work touches on the cathartic process of post-slavery healing and traditional culture. Sam X’s art has a diverse audience and has been exhibited in museums, art galleries and universities both nationally and internationally.  His pieces are among the personal art collections of poet Maya Angelou and entertainer Eryka Badu.

For its current show, the Spady Museum reached into its archives of donated artwork and artifacts to create “Local Treasures of African History,” which is on display through April 26, 2013. The objects in “Local Treasures” represent regions primarily from sub-Saharan West Africa and southeast Africa, which should be viewed not only as visual works of art, but also as required components of sacred and secular ceremonies, celebrations and tributes tied to the natural and supernatural cycles of life.

Saturday, March 30 – 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Springtime Festival  (New!)

In celebration of spring, the Spady Museum invites the public to join them in the Williams Cottage for an egg-decoration and egg-stuffing party, complete with pastries and beverages created by Alex Jones, a culinary student at West Boca High School. Families are encouraged to bring recyclable materials to create an art sculpture that will house and hide Easter treats. Delray Beach mural artist Sharon Koskoff helped direct the project, which will incorporate materials donated by families. Participants are encouraged to bring empty milk cartons, juice boxes, egg cartons and other recyclable items into a large, colorful, collective art piece!  The hands-on project will be on display at Sunday’s Easter Egg Hunt on the Spady Museum complex, 170 NW Fifth Avenue, Delray Beach. Children and their families will also be decorating real eggs with paint and stuffing plastic eggs with candy and treats. Free, donations welcomed.

Sunday, March 31 – 12:30 to 3 p.m.

Easter Egg Hunt  (New!)

Come in your Sunday best or play clothes, little people! This event is for you! The big backyard of the Spady Museum complex will be transformed into a space filled with eggs for you to find. Run around in old-fashioned fun and search for your reward. Parents, bring your cameras. Free, donations welcomed.
