STAMFORD, Conn. - March 28, 2013 - PRLog -- Child Advocates of Connecticut (CAC) contacted The Law Offices of Schafer & Schafer, LLP with a request for assistance after the firm received recommendations from others in the legal community. The organization, which advocates for abused and neglected children, was seeking legal assistance on a pro-bono basis. The referrals were made based on previous work the Stamford workers’ compensation attorneys have performed in the Connecticut juvenile court system.

CAC is an organization that collaborates with social workers, attorneys, judges and others in the community to help at-risk children get placed in permanent homes that ensure their safety and well-being, according to the organization’s website. The organization’s staff works with volunteers from the community to help them advocate for the children’s best interests. This includes helping make recommendations to the court regarding the cases of these children, many of whom have been neglected or abused by their parents or guardians.

The organization’s executive director, Stacey Sobel, reached out to The Law Offices of Schafer & Schafer, LLP for pro-bono legal advice and counseling specifically regarding Guardian Ad Litem matters. A guardian ad litem is a person who is given the legal responsibility of protecting the rights of a ward (such as a minor, an infant of a mentally incapacitated person) in court for the duration of a specific legal matter.

Child Advocates of Connecticut contacted out to The Law Offices of Schafer & Schafer, LLP after the law firm was recommended by multiple members of the bar and bench who knew Attorney Timothy M. Schafer from his former post as a juvenile law panel attorney in the juvenile court program in Danbury, which also serves Stamford. In Mr. Schafer’s role, Attorney Marisa F. Schafer has experience serving as a pro bono attorney for Lawyers for Children America, which allowed her to represent abused and neglected children in juvenile court.

Before becoming a lawyer, Mr. Schafer was a mediator who handled criminal matters in multiple Superior Courts in Connecticut. He established his focus in workers’ compensation while working at a small law firm in Norwalk and then went on to start his own practice in 2008. In addition to being admitted to practice law in the states of Connecticut and New York, Mr. Schaffer is also certified in alternative dispute resolution. Ms. Schafer joined the law firm in 2012, following years of working for a small general practice law firm. She has been admitted to practice law in the states of Connecticut and New York, as well as before the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut.
