WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. - March 28, 2013 - PRLog -- Los Angeles March 28, 2013- The LinkedIn School Nutrition group announces a new poll ; Should School Nutrition Services Provide "Free and Reduced" Eligible K12 Students with the Possibility to get Three Meals per Day, 365 days per year in any School that serves Food in their vicinity?

The School Nutrition LinkedIn Group Poll http://www.linkedin.com/groups/Should-School-Nutrition-Services-Provide-2027611.S.227082716?qid=bf1715d3-440a-493d-b17e-5645dd255c1d&trk=group_most_recent_rich-0-b-ttl&goback=%2Egmr_2027611%2Egfl_2027611%2Egde_2027611_member_206114651%2Egmr_2027611 provides the following polling selections:

* Yes - 3 meals, 365 days, in any school

* Yes - 3 meals, 365 days, in their school

* 3 meals per day - only on school days

* No - Keep 2 meals daily on school days

The School Nutrition LinkedIn group’s site and  the School Nutrition Facebook group's page just published an article about “Dems seek to expand school lunch program to weekends, holidays”

The Obama administration achieved in its first term the goal of face-lifting school food services nationwide. All schools provide healthy meals for kids that are eligible to “Free and Reduced” meals, leading that way the fight to reduce child obesity, and lead the fight to reduce the growing obesity rate in the US.

The majority and a growing number of kids eating in School Cafeterias are eligible for “Free and Reduced” meals, which are mostly paid by the government.

On the average, school cafeterias are open 180 days a year for lunch and a growing number of schools serve also breakfast. As we all know, kids need to eat at least 3 meals a day, 365 days a year. Some schools have started providing supper, using USDA regulation that allow serving supper as part of school activities only in schools that have a 50% and above participation rate of “Free and Reduced” kids.

USDA regulations about the eligibility of “Free and Reduced” meals 365 days a year, 3 meals per day, are very very complex and limiting the basic right of these kids to avoid hunger and eat healthy year and day long.

The time has come for the Obama administration to set the goal for its second term – meet the right of kids to have 3 healthy meals daily, 365 days a year.

A kid that is “Free and Reduce” approved should be able to eat at any school kitchen that provides food for “Free and Reduced” kids, 365 days a year, 3 meals per day, not only at his school that may be far from his home or is not providing food 3 meals a day 365 days a year, without any other USDA imposed limiting regulations.

Today’s level of technology, allow kids to inform schools that serve food close to their homes about their intention to come for a meal, when they are not in school – afternoon, weekends, holidays and summer vacation. Pre-registering by phone, text, website etc will allow school cafeterias to be informed in advance about the number of participating kids in a specific meal and prepare food accordingly.

By having “Free and Reduced” kids eating 3 healthy meals we will meet the basic right of a school kid to have an equal opportunity to study without being constantly hungry, and fight child obesity in the best possible way at the same time.
