OCEANPORT, N.J. - March 27, 2013 - PRLog -- The New Jersey Marathon is just a few short weeks away, and while everyone may not be able to participate as a competitor, volunteering on Race Weekend, May 3-5, is a great way to support the state's most prestigious road race and the thousands of athletes and spectators that make the event such a special day each year.

Being part of the team that supports these athletes as they test their physical limits, running through the shore towns that have also been tested as a result of Hurricane Sandy, will be especially uplifting this year. The New Jersey Marathon’s slogan for the 2013 event “Up and Running” speaks not only to the resiliency of its runners, but to the resiliency and the commitment from the community of volunteers that will allow The New Jersey Marathon to take place this year.

In addition to the camaraderie that being a part of the team fosters, along with the thanks and appreciation of thousands of athletes and spectators, volunteers experience a sense of great satisfaction in having helped make these races a smashing success. Many of the volunteer groups and individuals come back year after year to support the athletes, sponsors, healthy living, and to have fun in an exciting, upbeat environment! Try it, you may just make this a spring tradition of your own!

An army of over 1400 volunteers will help in areas such as race registration and race packet pickup, Barnabas Health Family Festival and Kids Races, The Novo Nordisk Health & Fitness Expo, the Start/Finish line area, and on the courses.  Some of the duties include handing out water and other refreshments to the athletes, answering questions from spectators and athletes, pointing everyone in the right direction, preparing and distributing finish line bags for athletes, ensuring the course are safe and well managed, providing a helping hand to the athletes after they finish (as needed), handing out food, finisher's medals, etc., and most of all, cheering the athletes on every step of the way.

“Volunteers are the lifeblood of The New Jersey Marathon,” said Joe Gigas, race director.  “Without the assistance of so many dedicated men, women and children, we could not put on such an exciting, fun event which benefits: charities, the state, counties and Shore communities in so many ways.  I hope that anyone who doesn't participate in one of our events will join our Volunteer team to support the races and the competitors.”

The New Jersey Marathon's theme for 2013 of “Up and Running” emphasizes its resolve to conduct the weekend's festivities and help in the region's recovery efforts. US Road Sports, which owns the event, and The New Jersey Marathon earlier announced a series of initiatives termed “Restore the Shore,” to be implemented to help the region's recovery efforts from the lasting effects of Hurricane Sandy.  The Marathon, as part of a full weekend of running and health-related activities, winds through eight towns on the Jersey Shore, which all suffered damage from the storm.

The popular race, which starts in historic Monmouth Park in Oceanport, also travels through Monmouth Beach, Long Branch, Deal, Allenhurst, Lock Arbour, Asbury Park, and Ocean Grove and finishes on the Ocean Promenade in Long Branch.  As it became clear that changes needed to be made in the race courses this year, the communities and race organizers have worked closely together to finalize the course routes and expect the entire 26.2 mile route will be completed very soon.

For thousands of avid athletes, beginners and everyone in between, the New Jersey Marathon at the Shore is one of the highlights of Spring.  The weekend includes an exciting Health & Wellness Expo in addition to a full marathon, half-marathon, half-marathon relay, 5K fun run/walk, kids races, and Kids and Family Events, world-class courses designed for speed, great area restaurants and attractions, and amazing oceanfront scenery.

Registration for all events, course views (when finalized), information about volunteering and sponsorship and details of the entire weekend of activities and more are available at the race Website at www.NJMarathon.org and the event Facebook page at www.facebook.com/NJMarathon.  Runners and fans are encouraged to follow The New Jersey Marathon on its Twitter @NJMarathon.

Beginning runners, walkers and athletes with disabilities are all invited to participate.  The New Jersey Marathon also conducts a series of training sessions and related events to help participants of all levels to prepare for their races.

The New Jersey Marathon is owned by US Road Sports & Entertainment Group, which conducts road races nationwide, including the Allstate Life Insurance 13.1 Marathon® Series.

Major sponsors of The New Jersey Marathon include Novo Nordisk, Barnabas Health and Investors Bank.
