SPRINGFIELD, N.J. - March 27, 2013 - PRLog -- After hospital discharge, acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients require quality long-term care to prevent the recurrence of major cardiovascular events.  Nurse practitioners play a very important role in secondary prevention, and it is critical that they are aware of the changing landscape of oral antiplatelet therapy.  This program will address profiles of established and new antiplatelet drugs; efficacy and safety data from ACS trials involving aspirin, clopidogrel, prasugrel, and ticagrelor; and use of antiplatelet therapies in post-hospital discharge management.  Duration of therapy will be discussed to optimize the balance of ischemic vs bleeding risk, and patient compliance.  In addition to oral antiplatelet therapy after an ACS, a number of interventions and cardiometabolic goals (lifestyle and pharmacologic), based on clinical trial evidence and evolving clinical practice guidelines, are recommended to reduce the risk of another ischemic event.  Evidence-based presentations and a case study with faculty panel discussion and audience participation will identify best practices in secondary prevention.
