PRESS RELEASE

TECHNOLOGY IN THE COURTROOM – NOT A GIMMICK BUT A POWERFUL LITIGATION TOOL

Paperless Courtrooms?

Denver, Colorado March 25, 2013:  The iPad is making its way through the courtrooms in the Denver Metro Area.  The Johnson Sauer Legal Group (JSLG), a family law firm in Denver, Colorado, has sparked the interest of judges, opposing counsels, and witnesses by utilizing iPads during hearings and case preparation to best serve their clients in an efficient and effective manner.  M. David Johnson, the Firm’s managing partner, introduced the iPad to the courtroom at a hearing in Montrose District Court in December of last year. Since then, every attorney at JSLG has incorporated the iPad into their daily family law practice.  Going forward, JSLG intends to present all exhibits using the iPad.

JSLG’s innovation makes a paperless courtroom a reality today.  iPad usage allows lawyers  presenting evidence to a court more efficient means of managing the sometimes overwhelming volume of information in a case.  The iPad gives attorneys more time to prepare and help the client achieve their litigation goals.  The iPad also allows the attorney to be more efficient, organized, and persuasive, increasing the client’s chance at success in the courtroom. Judges have been pleasantly surprised with using the iPad because it alleviates the need for binders on the limited space at the bench.

In the legal world, time is the client’s money and use of an iPad can save a client a tremendous amount. At the firm’s expense, JSLG provides the court with four IPads at hearings: one for the judge, one for the witness, and one for each party or counsel. JSLG provides the court not only their own client’s exhibits but also copies of the exhibits opposing counsel intends to offer into evidence.  This efficiency means that the expense a client would otherwise incur for preparation of multiple hard copies, plus notebooks, tabs and copy charges, is saved for more important tasks.

The iPad has not only proved to be an effective tool at trial, but also allows the attorney to stay more organized through the pendency of the case and manage the large amounts of documentation often necessary in family law matters.

Critics who look at the iPad as simply a gadget or a toy for presenting exhibits in the courtroom have been proven wrong. The iPad is easy to navigate and use while presenting information. Attorneys are able to find documents more quickly and use the court’s precious time more efficiently.  JSLG attorneys are a couple “touches” and “swipes” away from presenting exhibit C to triple T in a matter of seconds.  The flow of the presentation is not interrupted trying to find exhibits.  Most importantly, the attorney is able to be more professional during highly litigious and complicated cases. Using technology and resources to benefit your case, JSLG is not only being more prepared, but being better prepared.
