“FANS OF BELLA DA BALL” START CAMPAIGN TO SECURE BELLA’S STAR ON WALK OF STARS (www.star4bella.com)
A group of fans and friends of local celebrity host/entertainer Bella da Ball, aka Brian Wanzek, has begun a fundraising campaign to secure a star for the entertainer on Palm Springs’ famed Walk of Stars.
Spearheaded by a group of entertainers who have worked with Bella over the years at a variety of venues and functions, the group announced the launching of the campaign on March 6th at a celebrity “roast” of Bella da Ball at Azul in downtown Palm Springs.
An historical landmark, Palm Springs Walk of Stars was founded in 1992 and honors individuals with a Golden Palm Star embedded on the sidewalks of Palm Springs. Honorees must have, by their presence in the area, contributed to the charm, worldwide prominence and name recognition of Greater Palm Springs. Stars are located on the sidewalks of Palm Canyon Drive, Tahquitz Canyon Way and Museum Drive.
The “Bella Fan Club” secured approval by the Walk of Stars Board of Directors for a star dedication, and now must raise $12,500 to secure its placement and host a dedication event, planned for some time in June. Any overage will be donated to a charity of Bella’s choice. The group has launched an IndieGoGo crowdfunding campaign and has 40 days remaining to raise the money (May 3rd). Crowdfunding allows donors to “pool” their money in support of causes. Any member of the public can support the campaign by donating and the money is not collected unless the entire goal amount is reached. The group has come up with a series of “perks” based on giving levels, to reach as wide a variety of donors as possible, including a private reception with Bella following the dedication event.
Brian Wanzek, perhaps better known as drag personality, Bella da Ball, is Palm Springs’ area social ambassador and “host/hostess with the mostest.” He has been involved in and instrumental in benefits and functions of numerous Palm Springs organizations, including Aids Assistance Project, Palm Springs International Film Festival, Greater Palm Springs Pride, Save A Pet, Friends of the Palm Springs Animal Shelter and so many more. Bella has been producing and hosting the Cabaret Revue at Azul for three years with drag personalities and male and female vocalists; and hosts Trivia Night each Monday at Ace Hotel.
A past recipient of the Desert Business Association Outstanding Community Service Leader award, Bella/Brian will also receive the Herb Lazenby Community Service Award for the AAP at the annual Evening Under the Stars in May.
The group is also planning a fundraising concert on Wednesday, April 10th at 7 pm, titled “Bella’s All-Stars” at Azul Alibi, 369 N. Palm Canyon, Palm Springs. The extravaganza will be hosted by local celebrity Michael Holmes of The Judy Show, and feature some of the valley’s most popular entertainers, including singers Charles Herrera, Carol Kaminas, Doug Graham, Jerome Elliott and drag personalities Marina Mac, Melissa Stratman and more!
