March 26, 2013 - PRLog -- There are many characteristics in the Middle Eastern nose structure that makes rhinoplasty a difficult procedure. This is one of the many topics highlighted at the 10th Annual Middle East Otolaryngology Conference and Exhibition, organised by Informa Life Sciences Exhibitions. The event will take place in Madinat Jumeirah Arena in Dubai, UAE on 21-23 April 2013 and is expected to attract more than 700 regional healthcare professionals from the ENT field.

Heavy, thick skin and weak cartilage support are important parameters in the formation of the Middle Eastern nose. These aspects exhibit certain characteristics that affect the appearance of the nose including a wider, larger nose, a long nose, a drooping nose, an acute nose-lip angle, a deep nasal root angle, and a prominent arching nose.
“The two key facts in surgical procedures for Middle Eastern patients seeking Rhinoplasty for aesthetic and non-aesthetic reasons are, avoiding too much reduction in the size of the nose, and reshaping the cartilages instead of removing them completely. A nose significantly reduced in size reveals more negative impacts of scar contracture over the time. So the principle of structural augmentation and creating support, especially in the base of the nose is of great importance, in order to avoid complications,” highlighted Dr Mohsen Naraghi, Division of Rhinology and Facial Plastic Surgery, Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran.

Dr Naraghi will be speaking on the topic of the ‘Middle Eastern Nose’ at the Middle East Otolaryngology Conference which will host a variety of local, regional and global experts in the ENT and otolaryngology surgery fields.
Most patients of Middle Eastern backgrounds actually have a deficiency in structural support, as opposed to the common assumption of having excess structures in their noses. Through evaluation and facial analysis, it will be revealed that many humps are not very excessive in size, and some parts of the hump are evident because of the deficiency in the root and base of the nose. The false effect of inadequate projection of the nasal base is a common cause of surgical mistakes on operating on Middle East patients.

“Mistakes in Rhinoplasty surgical procedures carried out on Middle Eastern patients could be prevented by starting the correction on the nose from the base and continuing to the upper parts of the nose. I have presented my personal experiences on several thousand cases of rhinoplasty on Middle Eastern patients on numerous meetings of facial plastic surgery in the United States, Europe, Middle East and Asia. The results of the new techniques could result in preserving the natural beauty of the nose and simultaneously maintaining the function,” added Dr Naraghi.

Running alongside the conference is an exhibition with more than 70 exhibitors showcasing the latest technologies and product launches from manufacturers and distributors within the ENT field. Products such as hearing aids, laser machines, microsurgical instruments and sleep apnea devices will be on display from companies such as Karl Storz, Medtronic, GlaxosmithKline, and MSD. The event is supported by the UAE Ministry of Health and the Dubai Health Authority.
