By: Nikwax Verde PR & Consulting Julie Evans 970.259.3555 Julie@verdepr.com Sudanese refugees dealing with the daily struggle of feeding their families have been given a helping hand from Nikwax. The UK-based waterproofing company has developed a unique solution to help refugees in the Chadian desert cook food. Nikwax was approached last year by TchadSolaire, an NGO working to improve the lives of Darfurian refugees in the Chadian desert. The growing refugee camps and the need for cooking fuel has put pressure on the surrounding ecosystem, and women who leave the camps in search of wood risk being attacked. The NGO provides refugees and local people with simple but effective solar cookers. Not only do the cookers mean women can feed their families without risking their safety by venturing out to collect firewood, but also it protects the local scrubland environment from being destroyed by fuel fires. These solar cookers are simply made from cardboard and aluminium foil. Prior to the Nikwax solution, moisture from spillages and condensation was reducing the lifetime of the cookers. The charity approached Nikwax asking if they could advise on a waterproofing solution. Nikwax went one step further and invested time and money to develop a new solar cooker waterproofing product. It’s already been delivered for free to the refugee camps to help waterproof the solar cookers. The unique waterproofing formulation can more than double the lifetime of the cookers and reduces the amount of replacement stoves required. For a NGO with limited resources, this represents a significant savings and allows more families to benefit. Nikwax founder, Nick Brown said, “TchadSolaire is doing an amazing job helping to make a real, and lasting, difference to the lives of the Sudanese refugees and we are only too pleased to help. We will continue to help them to waterproof their solar cookers for as long as they need.” A refugee woman of the TchadSolaire cooker-manufacturing team said, “Our solar cookers are not the quickest-cooking available, but they do cook in good time for the midday and evening meals, as there is sun most days of the year. The solar cookers are by far the cheapest and easiest to make, but water and condensation from cooking meant they didn’t last as long as we had hoped. Thankfully, Nikwax has come up with a great solution to waterproof them meaning they last at least twice as long. It is thanks to generous support from organizations like Nikwax that we are able to help improve our daily lives and also those of the families in the area. Now we have almost no conflicts any more and we are much more at peace.” The first 300 litre shipment went out to Chad in 2012 and a larger free shipment of concentrate was sent more recently as part of this ongoing campaign.
