LOS ANGELES - March 25, 2013 - PRLog -- Significant media attention has recently focused on rate increases impacting those who own long term care insurance protection.

"Rate increases make sexy news coverage for newspapers and television new coverage but they typically don't address the full story," explains Jesse Slome, executive Director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance http://www.aaltci.org.  "They make it appear that the rate increase is a take it or leave it offer which is clearly not the case."

Slome appeared last week on CNBC's Power Lunch news program to discuss rate increases.  "It's very sexy news coverage to scare people with headlines about 85 percent rate increases but not to tell them that many people will continue to pay the same cost merely by reducing their inflation growth option," Slome notes.

As part of the CNBC coverage Slome shared that only around one percent of individuals drop their coverage when a rate increase is imposed.  "The individual used to portray the impact of the rate increase purchased coverage 17 years ago." Slome points out.  "Tell me something that costs the same today as it did 17 years ago and I'll bet their state retirement benefits are a lot higher today than they would have been two decades ago."

While AALTCI does not lobby or have a political agenda, the organization believes in the importance of telling the story correctly. Established as a not for profit entity, the Association produces numerous consumer guides on the topics of long term care planning and long term care insurance.
