“There are still people in the world who don’t allow others to be their authentic selves—and our job is to change that! Our work is about building relationships and bridging cultures,” said American Conference on Diversity President and CEO Elizabeth Williams-Riley, during the lunch at Liberty House Restaurant & Catering. Strap on your walking shoes and join us May 19 at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, N.J., to raise awareness and funds and enjoy a leisurely walk along the waterfront promenade with views of Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island. Registration for this year’s Diversity Stride Walk-a-thon will begin at 10:30 a.m. and the step off/ribbon cutting at 11:30 a.m. All contributions help support the following ongoing youth-education programs: ►Lead for Diversity (LFD): This is a year-long initiative that begins with an intensive summer residential retreat experience. The program brings teams of students from high schools across New Jersey together to engage in experiential workshops, small group discussions, and action planning around social justice and diversity issues. During the summer, student teams work together to create an action plan specific to their school or district, which they implement during the ensuing school year. The action plan has the potential to reach the entire school population. Annually, our LFD schools’ action plans impact an estimated 20,000 New Jersey students. “Lead for Diversity taught me many things. There’s more to me than what you see!” said Alexandra, a 2012/2013 delegate and senior at Dickinson High School in Jersey City. “LFD also teaches delegates to challenge limitations and allows for greater equality.” Other programs supported by the funds raised from this event include: ►Manytown: Human-relations youth forum held regionally. Manytown is a one-day program that provides the opportunity for students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds to discuss relevant issues and identify strategies to improve the climates in their schools and communities. ►Awareness to Action: This is a customized interactive youth workshop, utilizing experiential activities that infuse a greater understanding of diversity, inclusion, and anti-bullying into students’ learning environments. ►College Connection: This initiative is for college students to create both personal and intellectual learning, along with a powerful and deeper understanding of and respect for the value of diversity and inclusion. Our work is focused on enhancing learning experiences by building campus community, offering internship experiences, and providing diversity training that includes real-life experiences. ►School Swap: This unique opportunity allows participants to experience a day in the life of their peers from different schools. By bringing two demographically different schools together, it helps students explore the disparities and similarities that exist among them. Schools are matched based on the demographic make-up of the student body, location, and/or school type. Through our youth programs, student participants become change agents, utilizing their new skills to make their schools and communities more welcoming for people from all backgrounds.
