What To Do When Employees Go Bad.

PLANTATION, Fla. - March 22, 2013 - PRLog -- Stories like that of a fired DuPont scientist leaving on his last day with proprietary information valued at $400 million, on a thumb drive, in his pocket, are frequently in the news…but just how prevalent is employee data theft?

Nine out of ten IT employees surveyed in a study by Cyber-Ark Software, indicated that should they be laid off, they would take sensitive data with them.

Another study by The Ponemon Institute, found that 59% of departing employees admitted they had taken sensitive or confidential business information with them.

Employee Cyber-Crime A Substantial Threat.

This is obviously a substantial threat to any business and especially for those companies that store confidential information belonging to their customers. When the customer’s information is compromised, it’s the company they will come after for damages.

The keys to combating this problem of theft from within the walls are excellent prevention policies and protocols, and fast action when a breach occurs to neutralize it as quickly as possible.

Cyper-Crime. Malicious Hacking.

"In one case, an IT employee at a national company was given notice he was being let go," said Moody. "Before he left, the employee rendered the firewalls inoperable – then on his last day he cashed his check, and immediately went to a third party location where he hacked into his former employer’s computer system and caused it    to begin crashing."

It was just by chance that another employee at the firm saw the system going down and started unplugging computers. Moody's investigation was able to prove what happened, and provide evidence against the former employee.

Intellectual Property Theft.

In another case, Forensic Data Services was able to use our proprietary software, Pandora, when an employee jumped from company A to company B, taking with him company A’s own proprietary, industry specific, quote-developing software. The Pandora process compared the unique hash tags of files without ever looking at the content of the files, thereby not compromising company B’s confidential information.

"I was able to show that files on company B’s system were copies of files on company A’s system, and successfully close the case," said Moody.
