Revealing the toll of 76-plus countries' anti-gay laws

LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif., March 21, 2013 — In a world where same-sex marriage has gained broader acceptance, a same-sex kiss in 76-plus countries can lead to a prison sentence or even death. The new book “From Wrongs to Gay Rights” tells what’s going on in those countries, where anti-gay laws put lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people at risk of arrest for loving the wrong people.

Newly published in paperback and in electronic formats, the book is by LGBT activists in Cameroon, Uganda, the United Kingdom, the United States and Zimbabwe. In their own words, they tell of:

•    A man sentenced to prison for sending an amorous text.
•    A transgender woman who needs anonymous health care.
•    An archbishop who wonders: Dildos for AIDS widows?
•    A gay priest who struggles with his own homophobia.
•    Gay rights groups under attack from police and mobs.
•    The exuberance of Uganda’s first Pride Parade.
•    Bishop Christopher, a theological leper because he supports LGBT rights in Uganda.
•    A couple labeled effeminate because they drink Baileys, then sentenced to five years in prison.
•    And much more.

The book includes articles by Colin Stewart (editor of the book and of the “Erasing 76 Crimes” blog); the Rev. Canon Albert Ogle of San Diego, Calif.; Eric O. Lembembe of Cameroon; Miles Tanhira of Zimbabwe; Andy Kopsa of New York; Rachel Adams of the U.K.; and Clare Byarugaba of Uganda.  Many of the authors are available for interviews.  Much of the book first appeared in the “Erasing 76 Crimes” blog (http://76crimes.com), which reports on the human toll of anti-LGBT laws and the struggle to repeal them. Proceeds from the sale of the book, subtitled “Cruelty and Change for LGBT People in an Uncertain World,” will be used to support the blog as well as the work of activists seeking a better life for sexual minorities worldwide.

The book is available in paperback and Kindle formats from Amazon in the U.S., the U.K., France, Germany, Italy and Spain. It is also available from Smashwords in iBook, Nook, Kindle and other formats. Links to those sites are listed at http://76crimes.com/buy-the-book-from-wrongs-to-gay-rights/ . Price in the U.S. is $14.95 for paperback, $3.99 for electronic formats, with comparable prices in pounds and euros abroad.

“From Wrongs to Gay Rights” was published in February 2013 by P.C. Haddiwiggle Publishing Co., Laguna Niguel, Calif. For review copies and/or to arrange for interviews with authors, contact the editor/publisher via cestewart(at) cox.net.
