March 21, 2013 - PRLog -- March is National Endometriosis Awareness Month, and for some women this is a condition that can affect their fertility without them even being aware.  States Dr. Stephanie Singleton of The Fertility Center of Charleston, “Endometriosis is a gynecological condition that affects many women during their reproductive years.  It creates an inflammatory process within the pelvis that can cause debilitating pain and infertility.”
Endometriosis affects more than 5 million women.   There are some physical symptoms of endometriosis such as pelvic pain, cramping, heavy menstrual cycles and infertility.  Once diagnosed, there are treatment options available.  Dr. Singleton, the only female reproductive endocrinologist in the Charleston area, explains,   “Endometriosis can be suspected based on a history of pelvic pain and painful menses.  The only definitive means of diagnosing endometriosis is through surgery.  There are various means of treatment of endometriosis, but infertility treatment related to endometriosis is most often through in vitro fertilization.”
She advises that if a couple is struggling to conceive, an initial consultation is needed to determine if endometriosis is a factor.  She states, “We have treated several patients with endometriosis.   Once we know that this condition is causing them to be infertile, we can then begin treatment and start the fertility process.  Often times the diagnosis and treatment then clears the way for a couple to conceive.”
