Follow on Google News | Colleagues stunned by Mary's deceptionDeception was the last thing that colleagues and friends of educational consultant, Mary Jay, were expecting, but that's what they got. Mary, a senior A level examiner burst on to the publishing scene this month with her debut novel, Deception.
written from life? Mary says, 'When you've worked in education for as long as I have, you see a psychological kaleidoscope, a range of experiences and relationships,' and although that is something of a tantalising non-answer, Mary says none of her characters are taken from life. In these straitened times it isn't easy to have a debut novel accepted for publication. What set Deception apart from the crowd? Daniel Grubb, CEO of Fantastic Books Publishing tells me, 'Deception caught the eye of our editorial team when Mary first submitted it. Her main character, Miranda, is a strong, motivated and complicated woman. Mary not only catches the subtleties of this complex character to perfection, she weaves her into a compelling story. Better still, she has been such a pleasure to work with that our whole editorial team has fallen madly in love with her.' Does Dan have any advice for other budding authors out there? 'It isn't easy to make the transition from writing textbooks to writing fiction. We're lucky to have several authors on our books who have made the leap. The best advice I can give is to learn the craft and look on our website. We have a huge repository of resources for writers.' One reviewer says, 'Mary Jay's tale of love, suspicion, guilt and deception will take you to the height of your senses and leave you there.' You can find Deception at Amazon, Smashwords and in the Fantastic Books Publishing bookstore where it can be downloaded onto your PC, iPad or eReader. And every sale will benefit Manchester's Christie Hospital because Fantastic Books Publishing works to a charitable ethos, giving a share of the profits from most of its projects, competitions and books, to charity. Deception isn't usually a good basis for philanthropy, but in this case it's just the ticket. And just another twist in the tale. The amazing cover art was designed by Paula Ann Murphy in Chicago and is already rocketing up the Goodreads lists for great covers. One called 'Books with Deceptively Awesome Covers'.
