MAITLAND, Fla. - March 19, 2013 - PRLog -- The summer months aren’t here just yet, but family fun is already heating up at Daytona Beach, where families are hitting the beaches and the waves for surfing, parasailing, boating and more fun on the water.  Located on Florida’s East Coast, the Daytona Beach area features perfect swimsuit weather in the spring – making it a great time for families to Seize the Daytona in and out of the water, visiting and enjoying vibrant festivals and shows, taking in the sights at the beach, historical landmarks and more.

SPRING FESTIVALS AND SHOWS

Car enthusiasts will converge “en masse” this spring at the Daytona International Speedway March 23-24 for the 24th Annual Spring Daytona Turkey Run (http://www.daytonabeachcarshows.com/daytona-spring-car-show/) (previously known as the Spring Show), a massive car show and swap meet.  The event features thousands of cars on display, from vintage classics and street rods to unique custom builds and dragsters.  Spectators can enjoy the thrill and the view during pace laps and pit stop challenges.  Kids can join the festivities free of charge with each purchase of adult admission.

Legendary comedian and entertainer Bill Cosby is coming to Daytona Beach’s Peabody Auditorium (http://www.peabodyauditorium.org/eventschedule.html) March 24 for one of only four Florida stops on his 2013 tour.  Other acts and performances appearing at the Peabody this spring include a revival of Broadway’s flower-power musical, Hair (April 7); the National Collegiate Cheerleading Championships (April 11 and 13); Grammy-winning recording artist Bryan Adams (May 19); and, smash-hit musical Dreamgirls (May 20).

In celebration of the 500th anniversary of Juan Ponce de León’s landing on Florida’s coast in 1513, Florida Heritage Day (http://ponceinlet.org/calendar.cfm/mode/details/id/17001/...) (March 30) at the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse and Museum will allow visitors to relive the early years of Florida’s settlement and learn about the cultural heritage that shaped the state.  Families can explore historical displays around the park and climb Florida’s tallest lighthouse.  For an even greater understanding of how 16th century Spanish explorers first interacted with the native peoples of the Americas, visitors can tour the exhibit at the nearby Museum of Arts & Sciences, Borders of Paradise (http://www.moas.org/current.html) – The New World in the Eyes of the Explorers (running now through April 28).

The Ponce de Leon Lighthouse and Museum will also host Florida Lighthouse Day (http://ponceinlet.org/calendar.cfm/mode/details/id/17002/recurringId/68481/florida-lighthouse-day) (April 20), commemorating Florida’s 29 lighthouses that kept vigil for ships since the first Florida lighthouse was lit in 1824.  The “Old Lighthouse Keeper” will share his duties at the tower and entertain kids with his stories.  Workshops and activities are available for the whole family.

Returning for its fourth year, the Halifax Oyster Festival (http://www.halifaxoysterfestival.com/) (April 27) promises some of the best fresh seafood around, including a wide variety of oyster dishes prepared by Daytona Beach’s top restaurants.  The day-long event also offers live music from nationally recognized artists and an educational and interactive Kids Zone, with all profits from the event supporting the restoration of oyster reefs and shoreline habitats.
