OKEMOS, Mich. - March 19, 2013 - PRLog -- A recent prospective cohort study recently reported in the Archives of Dermatology that women who drink five or more regular beers per week may double their risk of psoriasis.

Among the findings was that high levels of gluten, an aspect of beer, may be the culprit.

80,000 nurses were followed for nearly 15 years. Abrar A Qureshi, MD, MPH of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston said that the factors were applicable to regular beer only, not light beer or other types of alcohol.

"Alcohol may induce psoriasis via multiple mechanisms, including immunological changes such as keratinocyte proliferation and upregulation of proinflammatory cytokines," the authors wrote.

For Dr. Marcy Street, a board certified dermatologist in Lansing Michigan and the nation’s first African American female MOHS surgeon in the country, the study is of significant interest. ‘We’ve known for a while now that gluten might be the culprit to many different issues with regard to a person’s health. This study is important because it aligns with previous findings that starch sources can be associated with psoriasis risk.”

Psoriasis is a common skin condition that causes skin redness and irritation. Most persons with psoriasis have thick, red skin with flaky, silver-white patches called scales. It is a life-long condition that can be controlled with treatment, and may go away for a while and then return. With appropriate treatment it usually does not affect the general health of the individual.
