Since becoming a partner of ENERGY STAR in 2006, Nissan has sufficiently assisted in manufacturing and assembling their vehicles in a way that easily helped improve the environment. Because of this they were named the 2013 Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award. This award is only given to the best organization dedicated to saving the environment through using their energy sufficiently.
There are a few plants that received awards as well, the powertrain plant in Decherd, Tennessee received the Challenge for Industry award for reducing the need for energy by 7% in one year. In Smyrna, Tennessee and Canton, Mississippi assembly plants received ENERGY STAR Certifications for the 7thstraight year.
Since partnering Nissan has saved more than 800 BTU, or British Thermal Units, of energy that it is used to build vehicles. Nissan's senior vice president of manufacturing, purchasing, production engineering and supply chain management, Bill Krueger, states that it’s “Enough power to power the all-electric Nissan LEAF vehicle for more than 750 million miles.”
