Georgia Youth Rugby Association (GYRA) hosts first flag rugby match in Georgia

PRLog (Press Release) - Mar. 17, 2013 - ATLANTA -- February 24, 2013 was a historic day in Georgia rugby history.  On a blustery but sunny day, the Georgia Youth Rugby Association (GYRA) held its first rookie rugby flag rugby match for first through fifth graders.  This is also the first rookie game between clubs within the state of Georgia.  Over 27 boys and girls participated from the Inman Park and Phoenix Rugby clubs. Phoenix Rugby hosted at their home field, North Park, in Alpharetta.

“We are so proud to launch this program in Atlanta.  The event was a huge success; everybody had a great time including parents who are all new to rugby. Enthusiasm was very high for all involved and we are excited about the future of the program,” offered Jim Turner, GYRA League Commissioner.  “We have growing programs for high school (U19) and middle school (15) already and this flag program will help us to engage youth at the elementary level.”

Last week the GYRA kicked off their regular league season between four clubs – Walton Raiders, Lambert High School, Kennesaw Mountain High School and Phoenix Rugby Club. These matches will lead to a state championship in April. Currently GYRA represents over 180 registered players at all levels of play.
