finite element analysis (FEA). FEA as applied in geotechnical engineering  and one dimensinal consolidation problems is a computational tool that includes the use of  finite element mesh generation techniques for dividing a complex partial differential equation into small elements, as well as the use of  program coded with FEM algorithm.  The complex problem is usually a physical system expressed in either PDE or integrals, while the divided small elements of the complex problem represent different areas in the physical system.
