Former Vatican official to speak at Graduate Theological Foundation Convocation Series

MISHAWAKA, Ind. - March 15, 2013 - PRLog -- Graduate Theological Foundation (http://www.gtfeducation.org/) faculty member Dr. Bernie O’Connor will deliver the Lord Robert Runcie Convocation Lecture on May 2 as part of the 2013 Convocation Series.

O’Connor’s speech, “The Papal Resignation of 2013: A Pilgrim’s Journey to Emmaus,” will examine the recent resignation of Pope Benedict XVI from several perspectives, including the impact upon relations with non-Catholic faith traditions.

Inaugurated in 1982, the Convocation Series (http://www.gtfeducation.org/about-the-foundation/runcie-convocation-lecture-series.cfm) has hosted some of the most outstanding intellectual figures in various theological fields to address the leading issues of the day. In 2000 the series was named in honor of the late Lord Robert Runcie, Archbishop of Canterbury, who officially endorsed the Foundation’s ministry course on behalf of the Church of England.

O’Connor is a Foundation Fellow and the John Henry Cardinal Newman Professor of Theology and Ecclesial Mediation. He also serves as the Chancellor’s Visiting Professor of Law and Humanities at Indiana University (Kokomo) and is a recognized expert in the area of papal diplomacy. O’Connor has held a variety of academic and ministry positions, including being called to the Vatican to serve the Congregation of Eastern Churches in 2004. He holds numerous graduate degrees and certifications, including a law degree from the University of Tennessee and a Doctor of Humane Letters from the Foundation.

Previous individuals who have delivered the Runcie Lecture include The (late) Reverend Canon Dr. John Macquarrie, world-renowned theologian and Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity Emeritus at Christ Church College, University of Oxford; Dr. Sayyid M. Syeed, Secretary General of the Islamic Society of North America; The Rev. Dr. Sandra Brown of Princeton Theological Seminary; and The Rev. Fr. James F. Puglisi, Director of the Centro Pro Unione in Rome, Italy, and Minister General of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement.
