By: Graduate Theological Foundation O’Connor’s speech, “The Papal Resignation of 2013: A Pilgrim’s Journey to Emmaus,” will examine the recent resignation of Pope Benedict XVI from several perspectives, including the impact upon relations with non-Catholic faith traditions. Inaugurated in 1982, the Convocation Series (http://www.gtfeducation.org/ O’Connor is a Foundation Fellow and the John Henry Cardinal Newman Professor of Theology and Ecclesial Mediation. He also serves as the Chancellor’s Visiting Professor of Law and Humanities at Indiana University (Kokomo) and is a recognized expert in the area of papal diplomacy. O’Connor has held a variety of academic and ministry positions, including being called to the Vatican to serve the Congregation of Eastern Churches in 2004. He holds numerous graduate degrees and certifications, including a law degree from the University of Tennessee and a Doctor of Humane Letters from the Foundation. Previous individuals who have delivered the Runcie Lecture include The (late) Reverend Canon Dr. John Macquarrie, world-renowned theologian and Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity Emeritus at Christ Church College, University of Oxford; Dr. Sayyid M. Syeed, Secretary General of the Islamic Society of North America; The Rev. Dr. Sandra Brown of Princeton Theological Seminary; and The Rev. Fr. James F. Puglisi, Director of the Centro Pro Unione in Rome, Italy, and Minister General of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement.
