Follow on Google News | Land Rover Will Show Off a New Nine-Speed TransmissionThe British automaker will debut the new transmission at the Geneva Motor Show.
By: Motor Werks Land Rover The new transmission won’t just provide more gears — it should provide smooth operation and improved fuel economy. Not only that, but this lightweight transmission, which has been developed with German company ZF Friedrichshafen, will have an even lower bottom ratio than the current transmission, a feature that’s valuable for off-road use. Land Rover is positioned as a prime partner with ZF Friedrichshafen, and as a result has gotten access to this sophisticated transmission, designed specifically for off-road use. It will replace a six-speed automatic, and will only be 6 mm longer than the outgoing transmission, and will weight 7.5 kg less. The current transmission must shift sequentially, but the new one will also include a skip-shift function in order to downshift more quickly when necessary, like during rapid deceleration. The system is also supposed to be able to learn rapidly from the driver’s style and adjust according to needs, shifting more briskly during high-performance situations and adopting economical settings when it doesn’t seem necessary to accelerate quickly. It is predicted that the new transmission should be able to improve fuel economy by as much as 16%. It will also offer a rear-wheel disconnect function in all-wheel drive vehicles in order to save an additional 5% in fuel while driving on the highway or situations where all-wheel drive isn’t necessary.
