India, as the Diabetes capital of the world had (as of 2010) 50,768,300 diagnosed Diabetic patients, 39,471,800 pre-Diabetics and an annual Diabetic mortality of 1,000,000.
Further, there is a huge incidence of diabetic complications affecting the heart, the kidneys, the feet and the eyes, largely because patient negligence. But why are patients so careless about their health?
Many patients have questions like “Why should I test regularly?” “Can I have sweets once in a while without guilt?”, “Should I take/ not take Diabetic medicines when I’m down with fever?”, “If I am put on Insulin, does that mean that my diabetes control is very poor?”, “Will my children get Diabetes?”, “Am I a borderline Diabetic?” When unasked and unanswered, these questions act as strong binding chains that stop the patients from following their diet, medications, exercise, taking tests and meeting doctors as scheduled.
