Follow on Google News | TattoHaiku2, judged by Jimmy Santiago Baca, presented by the 555 CollectiveJimmy Santiago Baca is announced as the judge of the 555 Collective's TattooHaiku2. The contest benefits Cedar Tree Inc., a nonprofit that brings writing and literature to at-risk and incarcerated youth in New Mexico.
The judge of this matter is the famed poet, Jimmy Santiago Baca, who penned the screenplay to Blood In Blood Out and multiple acclaimed collections of poetry (e.g., C-Train and 13 Mexicans, Martin & Meditations on the South Valley). His autobiography, A Place to Stand, documents his defeat of abuse, poverty, and illiteracy on way to becoming a transmodern hero. Incarcerated unjustly, Jimmy Santiago Baca became a poet while sleeping amongst murderers and rapists. Denied an opportunity to go to school by prison officials, he taught himself to read in his own cell. Staring through bars, he wrote his first poems by describing the contents of the sky, of his memories, and his dreams. Now he will decide which haiku shall be tattooed upon Joseph Carman, the poverty stricken philanthropist who created the 555 Collective. For a five dollar donation, anyone who is literate, and can count on their fingers is invited to join the fray by submitting a haiku (www.555c.org/ The deadline for submissions is April 4, 2013. As stated, the winner will receive a $555 gift certificate to Amazon.com, and his/her haiku will be published via tattoo needle into Joseph’s skin (on the 555’s online magazine as well). The tattoo will be performed at Pens and Needles Custom Tattoo in Colorado Springs, Colorado, which is owned and operated by the great Kristina Wright. About the 555 Collective The 555 collects creative energy and takes aim at trauma like a cannon filled with candy. Established in 2010 by Joseph K. Carman, the 555 utilizes humanity’s greatest resource (Art) in the fight against its greatest challenge (Trauma). We publish an online magazine (555c.org) and conduct projects that benefit a range of trauma survivors.
