BROOMFIELD, Colo. - March 12, 2013 - PRLog -- A team of web developers at Colorado-based Dolphin Micro plans to take Denver’s recreational sports scene by storm with the upcoming launch of its new sports and social network, Benchwarmers.

The Benchwarmers concept was born out of team members’ own experiences as players and team managers. Project manager Amber Pelon explains, “As a manager of a coed volleyball team, I was constantly having to find subs. It was especially frustrating on short notice. I would have to call or email the first person on the sub list and wait for a response. If they were busy, I would have to go to the next one on the list. Often, we would have to grab someone from another team that night. That doesn't work, however, if you are the first game of the night!”

Benchwarmers will make it easier for team managers to find last-minute subs through a “free agent” database. The site will also help local players connect with teams, pick-up games and tournaments.

“This site is different than anything else out there because it puts teams in direct contact with the right players and vice versa,” says developer Jodi Buckingham. “It isn't posting on a bulletin board or a craigslist-type site. Team managers can find out which of their players are coming to a game and message subs immediately if they don’t have enough players. Also, if players find themselves with free time, they can log in and find out if anyone needs a sub.”

Benchwarmers will only become a reality if the team is able to generate enough community support. In January, Dolphin Micro launched an internal contest to determine which new product the company would build in 2013. The developers were divided into three small groups and each tasked with conceptualizing, prototyping and promoting its own app.

“We decided to take a ‘survival of the fittest’ approach to pick the product that demonstrates the strongest early market potential,” explains CEO Eric Scott. “And we wanted to put the whole team to work exploring what they think a successful product looks like.”

On March 1st, each team went live with a pre-launch page designed to generate interest in its idea and gather the email addresses of supporters. The team that is able to collect the most email addresses will be given the resources it needs to finish its project.

“We really need the recreational sports community’s support to make Benchwarmers happen,” says Pelon. “We know there’s a real need for this kind of service, and we can’t wait to get the site live.”
