The Laughing Mermaid expands Asheville store, aided by new signs

The Laughing Mermaid’s bright and welcoming store greets the visitor with a delightful array of aromas and colorful soaps and body products.  The attractive range of products are complimented with catching names like –‘ Flashback’, ‘Wild Bohemian’ and ‘Sow your wild oats, Honey!’   As owner Mary Novak  puts it – “The Laughing Mermaid is a result when two great locations collide - “South Beach meets Funky Asheville”

Mary Novak and her family lived in South Florida and over 18 years ago launched the South Beach Soap Company.  She developed attractive soaps and lotions and created a successful business.  When the family planned to relocate to Asheville in 2008, Mary closed her South Beach Soap company and took a sabbatical.   In 2009 one of her children asked her to show her how to make soap, so Mary did and realized how much she missed making and developing quality soaps and body products.  This encouragement inspired her to launch ‘The Laughing Mermaid’ in the River Arts District, in December 2009.  The location was not ideal for the business and she looked for a location in downtown Asheville.    During this time she also took a marketing course at the Mountain BizWorks.  Since then the business has grown, creating a strong steady stream of clients and a fan base for her ‘tie-died 70’s style and colors’ which shows through all her product range.    “I am a child of the era and just love the style, though my kids groan when I buy another tie dyed something” laughed Mary

For the store expansion, Mary reached out to Asheville SIGNARAMA.  “I had my previous sign made by another sign company, but the previous experience was not great – they took a long time, were expensive and simply treated me as a job.  So I thought let’s try Asheville SIGNARAMA.  They had previously dropped by and left a card and I had held it for some time.  I called and the entire experience was great.  The team was very accommodating and I was impressed by their personal approach.  They took an interest in my business and created great signs.  Even when I had a small issue, they responded and had it fixed within in an hour.  They are my sign company and I continue to have signs being made and delivered by them”

Mary has over 18 years of developing and perfecting the soaps and lotions that she sells.  “My family was the test center – or as they put it ‘mum’s guinea pigs’.   I’m an RN and was always careful about every ingredient, always choosing the best ingredients to ensure the best product.  

‘Sudz for Studz’ is their exclusive men’s range and includes their ‘Man vs Beard’ range of shaving soaps.  The Laughing Mermaid appeals to local residents and tourists alike.  “Everyone wants natural products, yet I wanted to switch it up from being natural tones and color with a vibrant and fun twist – hence our name and logo – The Laughing Mermaid”.
