Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority's 60th South Atlantic Regional Conference heads to Charleston, SC

Sorority members expected to deliver over four million dollars to local community

CHARLESTON, S.C. - March 11, 2013 - PRLog -- Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated will hold its 60th South Atlantic Regional Conference April 17-21 in North Charleston, South Carolina at the Charleston Area Convention Center.  More than  3,500 members from Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina are expected to attend and deliver an economic impact of over four million dollars to the local community.

During the conference, members will address economic, health, and social justice and human rights issues as well as participate in a school supply collection to benefit local children whose parents are incarcerated.  A youth summit is also planned and will emphasize the importance of developing our young people for leadership roles.  Discussion topics will include Leadership, Laws impacting Teens, Teen Philanthropy, Branding for the Z Generation, and Maintaining Healthy Relationships.  At the Public Meeting, members of the military will be honored for their service to our nation and persons who have made significant contributions in  the community will be recognized. Other special activities for family members, guests and the community will also be available.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is the oldest Greek-letter organization established in America by black women on Jan. 15, 1908 at Howard University.  Led by International President Carolyn House Stewart, the organization connects thousands of college-trained women who give of themselves to support community service projects and scholarship programs.

Hostess chapters for the South Atlantic Regional Conference consist of 16 graduate chapters and 11 undergraduate chapters from South Carolina and Georgia.  The South Atlantic Region is noted as the largest of the 10 regions in the Sorority.  The Region, under the leadership of Regional Director Marsha Lewis Brown of Tampa, Florida; is comprised of 164 graduate and undergraduate chapters.  With a membership of over 260,000 women, the sorority has more than 972 chapters in the United States, the Caribbean, Canada, Germany, Japan, Korea, and Africa.

Special recognition will be given to members who have served the Sorority for twenty-five (25), fifty (50) and seventy-five (75) years.
