Atlanta Fibroid Expert Successfully Removes Massive Uterine Fibroids

ATLANTA - March 10, 2013 - PRLog -- Dr. Michael Randell, a gynecologist on the Medical Staff at Northside Hospital - Atlanta and a nationally recognized fibroid expert performed two separate surgeries on Friday, March 8, 2013 in patients who had unusually large uterine fibroids and wanted them removed without having to have a hysterectomy.  In both cases, the fibroids were more than 30cms and in one case, the fibroids weighed almost six kilograms or about 13 pounds.  Removing these size fibroids is a record for Dr. Randell.

Uterine fibroids are very common.  They occur in 2 or 3 out of every 10 women over the age of 35.  They occur most often in women between the ages of 30 and 50, but women in their 20s can have them too.

Although most women experience symptoms such as heavy vaginal bleeding and pelvic or abdominal discomfort, some do not exhibit any symptoms.  Fibroids can also make it difficult to get pregnant or carry a pregnancy to full term.

“Most women are unaware of the newest surgical techniques available to them to get rid of their fibroids,” said Dr. Randell.  “Today, regardless of the number or size of fibroids most women can have their fibroids removed in a procedure called a myomectomy, without the need for a hysterectomy."
