Henry was honored as our Player of the Year and as the Maxwell Football Club's National Player of the Year on March 1, 2013 in Atlantic City, New Jersey at the Maxwell Football Club's 76th annual national awards gala.
Henry, who has already attending classes at the University of Alabama, closed-out an incredible four-year career by breaking two rushing records. Henry broke the Florida all-time single season rushing record with 4,260 yards on 464 carries. In the process, he also broke the six-decade old national rushing record of 11,232 yards by Ken Hall of Sugar Land High School in Texas in the early 50's. Henry ended his career with 12,121 yards rushing on 1,389 carries. Both of those marks are national records.
"There were many great players and performances around the country this past season, but it's hard to top what Derrick Henry did for Yulee High School this year and over the course of his four year career," said Jeff Fisher, Editor-in-Chief of High School Football America. "We are proud to honor Derrick as our National Player of the Year and wish him success as he moves on to Alabama."
In addition to the national rushing record, Henry never failed to top 100 yards in a game during his 47 game career, plus he also scored 153 career touchdowns.
This is the second year that High School Football America has named a National Player of the Year. The 2011 winner was Jonathan Gray of Aledo High School in Texas, who is now playing for the University of Texas.
