Intensive Couples Therapy RetreatsFamily Therapy Vacations offering intensive couples retreats in Central America or any other vacation-like setting.
By: Therapy News Serving no more than two couples or one family at a time allows these senior clinicians to offer highly focused individual, couples and family therapy. Working from an attachment based relational model, Dr. Stewart, the lead clinician, reports the program to have a remarkable success rate at helping clients reset their relationships and establish a deeper sense of connection. The Nicaragua based program operates out of a spectacular property designed to highlight the natural beauty of the region with large suites overlooking the bay below. This setting allows clients to truly escape from the pressures and patterns of home and to focus on one another. The treatment model is described as intense, yet hopeful and healing. Clients are involved in therapy approximately four hours daily and have the remainder of the day to explore the region on two-person ATV’s provided by the program. When asked about the people participating in this program and its efficacy, Dr. Stewart reports having had clients from ages 10 to 70 and indicates that the majority are at a very tough point in their relationships and have tried other therapies with limited successes. He also notes that, although they have seen a number of families in the program, the majority of their clients are couples. In responding to the question concerning the program’s effectiveness, he indicates a deep sense of pride and satisfaction in how the therapy, combined with an opportunity to have fun together, has opened doors. The treatment model employed is informed by Sue Johnson’s, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Daniel Hughes’, Attachment Focused Family Therapy, and the work of Daniel Siegel. Dr. Stewart, a clinician with 30 years of experience, works together with his wife, a psychiatric nurse, to bring a gender balanced and sensitive approach to their work. This program is typically 7 days in length and is located just north of the Nicaraguan town of San Juan del Sur, 15 miles north of Costa Rica. With the addition of the new Destination Therapy option, couples and families can also participate at the location of their choice.
