Rhapsody in Blue is a strategic choice for the Noel Pointer Youth Orchestra. The late Noel Pointer was a classically trained musician who became a renowned jazz authority. Gershwin added jazz elements to classical compositions. Used in films like Manhattan, Rhapsody is often interpreted as a musical portrait of New York City. Through the process of putting this event on, NPF’s young musicians are discovering Rhapsody’s unique rhythms and chromatic harmonies while making new alliances with some of New York’s brightest musical talents.

Tatiana Tessman (Featured Pianist), winner of the World Piano Competition in 2006, graduated from the Moscow Conservatory of Music with a BM and MM in Piano Performance. She’s currently the MSM Professor of Piano at Columbia University and teaching artist at Manhattan School of Music and NPF’s Saturday Strings Program.

Jesse Henkensiefken (NPF Youth Orchestra Conductor) has collaborated with some of the world’s most renowned artists including Yo-Yo Ma and Rachel Barton. Hekensiefken has a Doctorate in Musical Arts from the University of Kansas and currently performs with Ensemble Du Monde and the New York Chamber Players.  He is a teaching artist for NPF’s Saturday Music Program and conductor of the NPF Youth String Orchestra.

Founded in 1995, The Noel Pointer Foundation is a not-for-profit that dramatically enriches children's lives by developing string music education programs for underserved communities throughout the New York metropolitan area. Since 1998, our In-School String Program, funded by the NYC Department of Education, has served over 17,500 Pre-K-12 public school students.
