Mcdonald’s And Michigan Department Of Education Offer Michigan High School Juniors Free Breakfast

Program aims to educate parents, students on value of a healthy daily breakfast

March 8, 2013 - PRLog -- McDonald’s of Michigan, in conjunction with the Michigan Department of Education, invite the nearly 120,000 Michigan high school juniors to boost their brainpower with a free breakfast before their Michigan Merit exam, including the ACT test, in early March. The collaborative effort aims to help parents and students understand the impact a daily, nutritional breakfast has on a student’s academic performance.

More than 500 McDonald’s restaurants in Michigan have provided students coupons redeemable for either a free Egg McMuffin® or Fruit & Maple Oatmeal, and one free Minute Maid® orange juice or milk. This free breakfast includes healthy menu offerings that are not only delicious, but also high in protein, fiber, Vitamin C and calcium.

“Breakfast is brain food,” said State Superintendent Mike Flanagan. “Students who eat a healthy breakfast are better fueled to achieve higher test scores and grades.”

Many studies have found that children who eat breakfast show improved cognitive function, attention and memory, which leads to improved academic performance.  With so many options at McDonald’s, including wholesome choices like oatmeal and the Egg McMuffin, customers can find exactly what they need to start their morning with a balanced breakfast.

“McDonald’s values its unique partnerships with schools across the state,” said Francisco “Pancho” Gonzalez, vice president and general manager of the McDonald’s Michigan Region. “We know how important the Michigan Merit Exam is to a student’s future. As a proponent of education and a leader in serving breakfast, this is our way of supporting the students as they prepare for their exam.”

Made with a freshly cracked Michigan Grade A egg, the Egg McMuffin is 300 calories and delivers 18 grams of protein as well as calcium and Vitamin A. Combining the perfect harmony of flavor, McDonald’s Fruit & Maple Oatmeal is 290 calories and provides two-thirds of the recommended daily servings of whole grain and about a half cup of fruit, including fresh red and green apples, tangy dried cranberries and two types of raisins.

McDonald’s continues to expand its menu offerings to meet the changing needs of its customers, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to deliver high-quality, great-tasting food and beverages consistently and affordably. In addition to listing caloric information on menu boards, McDonald’s launched a mobile app that provides customers with on-the-go nutrition facts, as well as an updated online meal-builder that allows one to customize their meal and get specific nutritional information. Before customization, approximately 80 percent of McDonald's national menu items are under 400 calories.
