"The Mapmaker's War: A Legend" stars fictional female warrior who challenges cultural norms.

March 12, 2013 - PRLog -- "The Mapmaker's War: A Legend" features a strong-willed female protagonist whose independent spirit and assertive character defy the stereotypical roles of the time for women as wife, mother, and domestic caretaker. The timely release of this inspiring work around International Working Women's Day is noteworthy.

NYJB reviewer Renee Fountain praises the author’s depiction of the main character who valiantly persists in following her own mind and defying expectations:

"Though the tale is positioned as a legend, Ms. Domingue taps into contemporary traditions, norms, and issues, creating a female protagonist who chooses the love of her work over societal norms. . . . Not only does she yearn to have freedom and privileges—a sin in her mother's eyes—but Aoife also covets the love of Wyl, a prince promised to another.”

Along with Ms. Fountain’s review New York Journal of Books is featuring an exclusive interview with the author. Ms. Domingue reveals the seed for this tale that rooted years ago in a college literature course:

“Once a project takes root, I spend months and years in what I call my research and incubation phase. This is a period when I keep a giant notebook of what streams through images, it’s of dialogue, fragments of an event in a character's life, random linkages—and notes on everything I read which somehow has a relationship to what I'm working on.”

The author’s stirring description of the story’s evolution from its early inception provides an insightful view into the creative process as it unfolded over some years. Additionally illuminating is Ms. Domingue’s description of Aiofe, the strong protagonist whose haunting voice came to the author intuitively:

“But Aoife, well, she entered my space. About half of the novel was written in three weeks in a torrent of words, my hand moving across the page to take down what she said, with no attention to chronology, just a stream of consciousness. This was not how I wrote at all ever. I had the peculiar feeling that someone was speaking through me, not to me. “

According to reviewer Fountain, The Mapmaker’s War, while a mythic tale taking place long ago, delivers a wonderful reading experience that poignantly addresses contemporary women’s issues:

". . . [Ms. Domingue] does a wonderful job of rendering the deep introspection, pain, and guilt that many women go through in an effort to balance their life paths."
