Marion Bignell who makes covers for casts was amazed, when she received a call from Rachel Halton of Reigate Cakes. This was a happy coincidence as Marion had just taken receipt of a wonderful new fabric design, which was covered in cup cakes. Rachel joyously ordered this fitting design. As Rachel was also the recipient of Cover My Cast’s 1000th invoice, Marion gave her a second cover free.

Cover My Cast supply covers for arm, leg, wrist and ankle casts and splints along with the amazing CastCooler ® which can instantly stop itches inside casts. They sell their products globally and have recently sent covers to India, Brazil and Australia as well as much closer to their base in Plymouth.  The covers come in a variety of stylish fabrics and are made to order.

Proprietor Marion Bignell decided to create cast covers when she broke her wrist following an accident. ‘I am someone who has sewn things for over 40 years and as I was waiting for my arm to be put into a fibreglass cast, I was already planning which fabrics I was going to use to make covers for it. I managed to change the colour of my cast to match my tights, or my outfit for the day. The reaction I had from friends, family and even strangers on the bus, was amazing. I realised that if this was what I wanted, others would want them too and so Cover My Cast was born.’

The covers are not just fashion accessories.Celebration Cake Maker Rachel who broke her ankle after slipping on the snow when collecting her boys from schoolpoints out that there are practical benefitstoo:

‘When I first had my cast I found it was snagging my clothes, bed sheets and my leather sofa. Once I got the cover this stopped.’

Marion continues, mothers find that the covers help keep their children’s’ castsclean too and they’re more hygienic and fun. ‘It was a real talking point,’ says Rachel, ‘I also bought a pirate one as I have two boys aged four and seven, they loved it. It caused lots of interest when I wore it to a pirate themed children’s play centre.’

Covers are available in a wide variety of colours and patterns. Latest fabrics for younger people include blue bunnies, a super hero design, denim and rainbow stars.

Rachel’s cakes also come in many designs. In fact she generally makes them to the bespoke specifications provided by the customersmany of them through the Reigate Cakes Facebook page where her work is showcased.  One customer recently asked for a cake incorporating golf, a one armed bandit and smoking. Reigate Cakes is the culmination of Rachel’s long-held dream to run her own cake business. After years of supplying delicious cakes to local cafes and shops, she started creating unique celebration cakes for friends and family and her business grew. Some of Rachel’s favourite designs for children’s cakes include Lightening McQueen, SpongeBob and Bat Girl. Perhaps Rachel’s next cake should feature someone wearing a cast cover!
